REDUCING СО2 EMISSIONS BY REPLACING FOSSIL FUEL WITH BIOMASS - WOOD WASTE IN THE POLOG REGION

· A hot water boiler (MA - 100,100KW) using pellets was procured and installed in the Central Primary School
Kosta Racin, municipality of Brvenica. With the replacement of the old fossil fuel boiler (which used oil) and with
the installation of the new boiler on biomass (wood waste - pellets) the cost for heating the school has been
reduced. It is planned the new boiler to use 22.000 kg of pellets (260.000 kwh; 1kg = 5kwh) to have 0
CO 2  emissions and the cost for the pellets would be 264.000 MKD. Hence the savings of the municipality of
Brvenica from the change of the heating practices in the school would be around 400.000 MKD (about 7.000
USD) annually. The municipality will use the money saved for other activities related to environmental protection;

· The capacities of the municipal administration were strengthened with the two workshops that were organized
during which 35 participants had an opportunity to become familiar with the climate change, global warming and
its effects, the greenhouse effect, as well as with the measures for addressing climate change. The participants
reviewed the Energy Efficiency Program of the municipality of Brvenica 2013-2015, determined priorities for the
municipality which were also submitted to the mayor of the municipality so that they can be introduced in the next
version of the program.

· Partnership between the civil society and the municipality was established, and public awareness among the
local population concerning the benefits and the need of using wooden biomass instead of fossil fuel was
improved by organizing three workshops with more than 45 attendees. The project, the project activities and the
expected results were presented on these workshops.
· An educational leaflet was prepared containing promotional content, 350 copies in Albanian and Macedonian
were printed and it was distributed in the schools and during the public events organized by the municipality of
Brvenica.

·  4 citizens' associations were established in the municipality of Brvenica under this project, "Brvenica" from
Brvenica, "Besa" from Chelopek, "Mesazhi" from Chelopek and "Green Clover" from Brvenica.

 Basic project information
