FROM THE GARDEN TO THE TABLE – WE EAT HEALTHY AND RESPONSIBLY

Not so long ago, my father began planting fruits and vegetables on a small area in our garden. In the beginning I was skeptical and I was not able to understand the point of making such a great effort, since everything we wanted could be found in the big supermarkets. His response was: “By cultivating my own garden, I am the one who decides what will be introduced in the soil and in the plants that I cultivate. This allows me to reduce the amount of chemicals which are hazardous to our body, and which contaminate the environment as well."

After trying the first fruits, I was able to see very well the difference; not only that the taste was better, but we also learnt to consume in a responsible manner. Previously, we used to buy more than we actually needed, so very often, the vegetables were becoming rotten and we had to throw them away. Now we provide them directly from the garden, while the additional products we buy from local producers. Our reasons for doing this are obvious: we refuse to buy food that, while on its way to our table, has released thousands of emissions of greenhouse gases. In addition, the taste of locally grown food is much better and lasts longer. We also find peace of mind because we know where exactly does the food come from and how it’s cultivated.

Apart from that, buying food from local producers creates significant economic opportunities, provides health benefits and helps in bringing together the community. Environmental protection, as well as support of the economy in the community is extremely important to us.
