The challenges of tackling climate change and environmental protection efforts must be overcome at the local level, with municipalities playing a key role.
The mayor of Sveti Nikole, Sasho Velkovski, explains that the wastewater treatment plant has been out of order for about ten years due to problems with its maintenance in the past decade. The reconstruction is currently completed and is expected to start operating in the next few weeks. The investment is around 162,000 euros and the funds were obtained through the cross-border cooperation program between Macedonia and Greece. With the commissioning of the WWTP, the primary and secondary treatment of the wastewater from the households from the city of Sveti Nikole will be obtained and their direct discharge into the river as it is at the moment will be prevented.
