Based on one very successfully project implemented in 2005 (in Jegunovce, Shemshevo and Vratnica as part of the local government of Jegunovce), the grantee replicated the projects in several municipalities in the Republic of Macedonia (local governments of Jegunovce, Shuto Orizari, Centar and Debarca) in the period 2007-2014. The projects were aimed at implementing energy-efficient measures in order to reduce environmental pollution, especially the GHG emissions from public buildings (primary schools, kindergartens, the Centre for children with special needs, administrative municipal buildings and street lights).
The main project activities were: reducing CO2 emissions from public buildings and reducing the energy cost for public buildings; organizing theoretical and practical training on energy efficiency and renewable energy sources for the local population; promotion in the media.
· Several energy efficiency measures were implemented in order to reduce the environmental pollution, especially the GHG emissions. Some of these measures were: 1820 energy efficient lights were installed in the buildings and on the streets, three solar hot water collectors were installed, 24 taps and broken windows were replaced, 9 springs for closing doors were installed, 330 energy efficient windows and 14 doors were installed, windows and doors were insulated with silicone tapes etc. The three projects together are expected to reduce the CO2 emissions for 127, 2 tones.
· Theoretical and practical trainings on energy efficiency and renewable energy sources were organized for more than 200 participants (employees in the public buildings, representatives of citizens associations and of the local government).
· A broad range of publications on energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and climate change were designed, printed and distributed (in Macedonian, Albanian and Romani): manual in 630 copies, 8 different versions of posters in 3450 copies, 4 types of stickers in 3627 copies, 3 types of brochures in 400 copies, leaflet in 673 copies.
· It was agreed with the municipalities of Jegunovce and Debarca to establish a separate municipal fund where the energy savings would be collected and the funds saved will be invested in other environmental climate change related projects.
· Cooperation and mentorship have been initiated with 14 CSOs and it was agreed to pursue joint participation in climate change projects
· A broad public awareness campaign was implemented involving meetings, workshops, interviews and presentation of films on the national media (TV, radio, newspapers), distribution of educational materials and lectures for students. Though all these activities the public was informed about the experience of using solar energy.
· The skills and the knowledge of the local population were used during the implementation of the project activities especially when installing the solar modules. Additionally, the project raised the awareness and the level of knowledge among the local population and the municipal employees concerning the benefits offered by renewable energy sources and the practical application of energy efficiency.
